How we keep Harambee safe

Giving should feel safe. Here is what we do, and what you can do, to protect every campaign and every shilling.

What we do

Every campaign is reviewed

A person on our team reads each campaign before it goes live, usually within 24 hours.

Organisers are verified

We check identity and ask for proof, such as an invoice, quote or letter, that matches the amount being raised.

Direct payments for big needs

For larger medical and education campaigns, we may pay the hospital or school directly instead of the organiser.

Photo and story checks

We look for copied photos and stories, and for details that do not add up.

Reports are taken seriously

Anyone can report a campaign. We may pause it and hold payouts while we investigate.

Your payment is protected

M-Pesa payments are approved on your own phone. Card details are handled by our payment partners, not stored by us.

What happens when a campaign is submitted

Submitted

The organiser tells their story and sets a goal.

Checked

We verify ID, proof and photos.

Approved

If everything adds up, the campaign goes live.

Monitored

We keep watching for reports and unusual activity.

How to spot a scam

Most fundraising scams share the same warning signs.

Asking you to pay outside Harambee

Real campaigns take donations through the campaign page. Be wary of requests to send money to a personal number in a message.

Pressure to give right now

Scammers create panic. A genuine need can wait a few minutes while you check.

Vague or missing details

Look for names, places, amounts and proof. Blurry or generic stories are a warning.

Photos you have seen before

If you can find the same picture elsewhere online, report the campaign.
